Guest Blog post writer Mirko makes and paints a Last of Us inspired horde by combining our Modern Zombies with Titan Forge Miniatures Swamp Zombies & Print Minis Infected Lab Workers
I printed a lot of zombies from the Patreon zombie release to test a speed painting workflow for the new Army Painter Speed Paints. To reduce any visible seams on the arms, I mostly used the pre-assembled ones, mirroring them for more variety. To allow me to field a really dense horde the majority of the regular zombies' bases are 20mm washers, while the bigger miniatures got a 25mm base.
My plan was to build and paint them all by Halloween...
So on Christmas, (only 2 months late) I managed to start painting!
Applying the base colours was quick and easy. I didn't bother too much with details, relying on dirt and grime to hide my mistakes. The gore was stippled on with a mix of brown and red and, to get constant variety in the tones, I only mixed small amounts and changed the ratios multiple times. Then the guts and exposed anatomy got some diluted purple and pink. Speed paints are a bit too vibrant, so I used AK Streaking Grime to bring all the colours together.
I used a bright yellow for mutations and fluids, as it is an element in the setting that I plan on using them for; other creatures and vegetation also have the colour yellow to mark them out as sick and mutated.
Here are some close-up shots of the larger, characterful minis, including a mutated scientist from Facility Biohazard Containment team:
